The master plan was the joint effort of the two cities of Sacramento and West Sacramento, to create a vision for their respective riverfronts. A major goal of the plan is to support high-density redevelopment opportunities in the riverfront districts to help ease the pressure for sprawl putting housing close to jobs and recreation close to housing. The development of the Sacramento Riverfront is all the more important in view of regional growth. As the centers of both cities increase in density, locating public space close to downtown housing particularly if it is accessible by a variety of transportation modes will be important in reducing traffic congestion.
